My name is William Sun, and I'm a student at Ward Melville High School. I have been interested in computer programming, science, and math for many years. This website is intended to showcase my awards/achievements or general commitments over the years.
But really, who am I? If I had to say, I'm that guy who everyone complains about because they ask for extra homework in math class, or who wants the test moved forwards instead of backwards. Yeah, that's me.
I recieved a 1520 on the PSAT in October 2018, resulting in me qualifying as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.
Science Olympiad: I earned 10+ medals at regional and state levels and 6 national level medals since 8th grade, competing in various events covering many scientific fields.
DuPont Essay: I won an honorable mention in a national science essay in 8th grade.
Science Research: I have completed science research projects each summer for 3 years (9th, 10th, 11th grade) in various labs at Stony Brook University.
All-State Piano: I qualified for the All-State Piano Showcase, a prestigious recital of which thousands from across the state compete to get a spot in, and only 13 qualify for.
All-State Orchestra: I qualified as an alternate for the All-State Orchestra, a prestigious orchestra consisting of the top orchestral music players from across the state.
SPTF Competition Awards: I tied for 3rd place in the advanced division of a county-wide piano competition.
MYO Touring in Spain: I played in several places all around Spain with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra.
Piano for Patients: I set up a branch of a community service group dedicated to playing music to patients in nursing homes and hospitals.
Chamber Orchestra: I qualified for my school's Chamber Orchestra, the highest level of orchestra in our school.
AIME Qualification: I qualified for a national mathematics tournament in 8th grade.
MoMath State Competition: I qualified for a state-level team math competition in 7th and 8th grade, won 2 regional and 1 state medal.
SCMTA Tournaments: I consistently competed in county-level tournaments run by SCMTA, winning several plaques/trophies/certificates since 7th grade.
Math Research: I qualified for the MERIT Math Research program, and with the math research I did there, I won a silver medal at the LI Math Fair.
Math Team: I was chosen as the President of the Ward Melville Math Team for the 2019-2020 school year (12th grade).
EigenTournament: I helped create and run the EigenTournament, a Long Island and NYC math tournament hosted at our school, for the 2019-2020 school year (which is its pilot year).
HMMT and PUMaC: I competed in the prestigious national math competitions of HMMT and PUMaC, hosted at some of the top colleges in the US and with some of the hardest competitional math problems for a high school level tournament.
Stanford Precollegiate: I took a college level Number Theory course in the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies program in the summer of 10th grade (2018).
College Math: I took several college-level math classes privately under 2 Stony Brook University PhD students (Santai Qu, Jiahao Hu).
CSIRE Program: I was accepted into a 4-week long college program studying data analysis with college professors and students.
Student Mentor at KidOYO: I was a student mentor at a coding camp for students, that teaches a range of languages from Python to Java to HTML.
St. Joseph's High School Programming Competition: I have placed twice in the St. Joseph's High School Programming Competition, placing 2nd in 10th grade (2018) and 3rd in 11th grade (2019).
Computer Science Club: I was chosen as captain of the Computer Science club at our school.
MIT Science Olympiad: I placed 5th in the Computer Science event What the Function at the MIT Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament.
Counties Swimming Qualifier: I qualified for the county swim competition with the best swimmers from all of Suffolk county.
Varsity Swim Captain: I was chosen as the captain of the Varsity Bosy Swimming and Diving team at Ward Melville.
TVSC: I swam for the competitive out-of-school swim club TVSC for 7 years, and I will continue to participate in it until graduation.
